Laos Shopping and nightlife
Shopping in Laos
Shopping in Laos focuses on handicrafts, textiles and locally produced goods. The night market in Luang Prabang is a highlight, selling handwoven scarves, embroidered bags, silver jewellery and bamboo crafts made by ethnic minorities. Vientiane's Morning Market (Talat Sao) offers a mix of souvenirs and daily goods, while boutique shops in the capital and Luang Prabang specialise in high-quality silk and sustainable fashion.
Traditional crafts are often made by hand, and buying directly from artisans supports local communities. Bargaining is acceptable in markets but should be done politely and with a smile. Popular souvenirs include Lao coffee from the Bolaven Plateau, handmade paper products, and wood carvings.
Nightlife in Laos
Nightlife in Laos is relaxed and generally quiet. In Vientiane and Luang Prabang, visitors can enjoy riverside bars, live music cafés and open-air restaurants rather than nightclubs. The atmosphere is more social than raucous, with most venues closing before midnight. Beerlao, the national beer, is a favourite among locals and travellers alike. In smaller towns, evenings are best spent watching sunsets over the Mekong or enjoying a simple meal with new friends.
