Where to stay in Bolivia
Bolivia has accommodation ranging from international and boutique hotels to inexpensive hostels, guesthouses and family-run lodgings. La Paz, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and Sucre have the widest selection, while tourist centres such as Uyuni and Copacabana offer accommodation across several price ranges.
In remote areas, accommodation is generally simpler. Multi-day tours around Salar de Uyuni and the southwestern Altiplano often use basic lodges, including buildings constructed partly from salt. Heating and hot water may be limited at high altitude, where nights can be extremely cold.
Eco-lodges are available in parts of the Amazon basin and around Rurrenabaque, often as part of organised wildlife or rainforest excursions. During major festivals, particularly the Carnaval de Oruro, accommodation can fill quickly, so booking ahead is advisable.
Camping is possible in some national parks and remote areas, usually at designated sites or as part of organised trekking and climbing trips. Facilities are often basic. Campers in the Andes and Altiplano should be prepared for strong sun, high winds and very cold nights, even when daytime temperatures are mild.
