India offers one of the most varied and rewarding shopping experiences in the world, ranging from modern malls to centuries-old bazaars where trading traditions remain very much alive. Prices can vary widely depending on location and quality, so browsing and comparing before buying is worthwhile.
Traditional markets are found in almost every city and town and are the best places to experience local life. These bazaars sell everything from fresh produce and spices to textiles, jewellery and household goods. Bargaining is common in street markets and small shops, particularly for souvenirs and handicrafts, but prices are usually fixed in malls, department stores and larger retail outlets.
India is especially well known for textiles and crafts. Popular souvenirs include handwoven silk and cotton fabrics, scarves and shawls, embroidered garments, leather goods, brass and copperware, carved wooden items, marble inlay work, incense, spices and tea. Jewellery is another highlight, with gold, silver and gemstone pieces widely available; visitors should buy from reputable shops and ask for receipts and certificates, especially for precious stones.
Nightlife in India
India's nightlife varies greatly by city and region, offering everything from high-energy clubs to relaxed evening socialising centred on food, music and culture. In major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Goa, the scene is lively and diverse, with rooftop bars, cocktail lounges, live music venues and nightclubs staying open late, particularly at weekends. Goa, in particular, is known for its beach parties, DJ-led clubs and laid-back bars that come alive after sunset.
In many parts of the country, nightlife is more low-key and often revolves around evening meals, cafés, dessert shops and late-night markets rather than bars and clubs. Cultural performances, including classical music and dance recitals, theatre and film screenings, are also popular evening activities in larger cities. Cinema plays a central role in social life, and late-night movie showings are common, especially for Bollywood releases.
Alcohol laws and closing times vary by state, and in some regions alcohol sales are restricted or prohibited altogether. Where alcohol is available, the legal drinking age differs from state to state and can range from 18 to 25. Visitors should also be aware that last orders may be earlier than expected, even in big cities. Overall, nightlife in India is varied and evolving, balancing modern entertainment with local customs and regulations.
