Visitors are required to have adequate funds to cover the duration of their stay without working.

Visas

Visas are not required by nationals referred to in the chart above for the following durations:

• British citizens for stays of up to 180 days (British Overseas Citizens, British Subjects, British Protected Persons and nationals of British Overseas Territories may stay for up to 90 days).

• Nationals of Australia, Canada, other EU countries and the USA for stays of up to 90 days.

Visa note

Nationals not referred to in the chart above are advised to contact the relevant embassy to check visa requirements. Further information is also available on the website of the Hong Kong Immigration Department (www.immd.gov.hk).

Types and cost

Ordinary visa: HK$190; transit visa: HK$100.

Validity

The length of visa available to travellers varies according to nationality and the details of the application.

Transit

Nationals of most countries do not need a visa for transit in Hong Kong, but it is best to check the requirements (www.gov.hk/en/nonresidents/visarequire/general) in advance of travel.

Application to

At the nearest Chinese diplomatic and consular mission, or directly by post to: Receipt and Despatch Unit, Hong Kong Immigration Department, 2nd Floor, Immigration Tower, 7 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. You can find details of the paperwork required on the Immigration Department website (www.immd.gov.hk).

Temporary residence

A visa is required before visiting Hong Kong for the purpose of study, taking up employment, training, investment or residence. Contact a diplomatic and consular mission for further details.

Working days

Visa processing time is usually four to 20 working days, with an express three-day service also available.

Sufficient funds

For a visa-free stay, or using a visa that does not allow employment, visitors may be required to prove that they have sufficient funds to cover the period of their stay in Hong Kong.

Extension of stay

Where available, the official fee for an extension of stay is HK$190. If you wish to extend your stay, you must visit the nearest Immigration Department office at least seven days before your current stay is due to expire.

Entry with children

It is recommended that single adults travelling with children contact the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in their country of residence, regarding any documentary evidence of parental responsibility that may be required at immigration.

Entry with pets

To bring your pet to Hong Kong, you must obtain a permit from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (www.afcd.gov.hk). There is no quarantine period for pets coming direct from Australia, Fiji, Ireland, Japan, Hawaii, New Zealand or the UK. Otherwise, pets will be kept in quarantine for up to six months, depending on the documentation provided; there may be an exemption from quarantine if the dogs and cats are over five months of age on arrival and have complied with all the permit terms.
